Welcome to atmospheric special effects, a microsite about atmosphere or weather effects for film and tv. We create realistic rain, mist, snow and windy atmospheres, adding smoke, fog or haze for extra effect. Agog Special Effects UK microsites cover atmospherics, dry ice, fog, pyrotechnics, rain, smoke, snow, steam and wind, practical and physical effects. Need more info? Just ask! Jason Troughton 2011
Atmospheric special effects you may not see, but will experience.
Special effects success can be odd. Mention "Special Effects" and most people imagine explosions or death-defying encounters that are generally way outside everyday experience. However... with atmospheric special effects, directors often want a mood conveyed but don't want an effect to be seen at all.
Numbing cold, searing heat, urgency and industry, the special effects department takes its part in building credible environments where the lack of an environmental element would be obvious.
This is when experience counts, because putting the 'it' back in, whether 'it' be rain, wind, mist, snow or any another weather phenomena is often more complicated than, eventually, appears on screen.
All of our smoke effects are non-toxic and adhere to the HSE.EH40/92 Occupational Exposure Standard Limit 1992, we've further documentation available, and if you're not sure of how to achieve the atmosphere that your production needs, we'll be happy to give a few pointers. Just ring one of the numbers at the top of the page and ask to speak to Jason.
P.S. I wrote an insider's view feature for movieScope magazine in February 2011, about how our effects work lent atmosphere to Peter Weir's film, The Way Back. Here's the movieScope article as a pdf.
